ASTM A325 bolts are supplied as plain or galvanized (mechanical or hot dipped). We offer A325 bolts as Type 1, Type 3 (weathering steel), or A325T (thread-to-head, in lengths up to four times diameter, and 105 ksi over 1". The Type 1 bolts are made as medium steel with sufficient harden ability to obtain the required properties. The Type 3 bolts are made from composition "A" from Table 2 in the ASTM A325 specification (medium carbon steel with Copper, Nickel, and Chromium additions for weathering purposes). Dimensions are a specified for Heavy Hex Structural Bolts in ANSI/ASME B18.2.6 and threads are UNC (Unified Coarse) per ANSI/ASME B1.1.
A325M METRIC STRUCTURAL BOLTS
ASTM A325M bolts are supplied as plain or galvanized (mechanical or hot dipped). The chemical and mechanical properties are given in ASTM F568 ("Standard Specification for Carbon and Alloy Steel Externally Threaded Metric Fasteners"). The ASTM A325M bolt is equivalent to the properties of an ASTM F568 class 8.8 bolt. These properties are essentially identical to class 8.8 in ISO 898/I. Surface discontinuity limits are specified in ASTM F788/F788M. The ASTM A325M bolts are produced to the dimensions for heavy hex structural bolts as specified in ANSI B18.2.3.7M. The threads are rolled as specified in ANSI B1.13M, to a metric coarse thread with grade 6g tolerance.
A490 STRUCTURAL BOLTS
ASTM A490 bolts are supplied as plain (black) only. These bolts are heat treated to a tensile strength range of greater than 150 ksi. Medium carbon, alloy steel is used for these bolts. Dimensions are as specified for Heavy Hex Structural Bolts in ANS/ASME B1.1.
Structural bolts are designed to be used with nuts for the connection of structural members. The head of a heavy hex structural bolt is specified to be the same size as a heavy hex nut of the same nominal diameter, thus allowing a single size wrench or socket to be used on the bolt head and the nut. Structural bolts also have a shorter thread length so that the threads can be eliminated from the shear planes of the connection.
There are two primary ways in which structural bolts are used; Slip-Critical Connections and Snug Tightened. The AISC (American Institute of Steel Construction) publishes the "Specification of Structural Joints using ASTM A325 or A490 Bolts", which describes tightening methods for joints using structural bolts. In many cases (e.g., bearing connections, and bolts not in slip-critical connections or subject to tension loads), bolts can be used in the snug-tight condition. Snug tight is defined as the tightness that exists when all plies of a joint are in firm contact. It can normally be attained with a few impacts of an impact wrench or the full effort of a man using an ordinary spud wrench.
If full pretensioning is required, such as in slip-critical connections, then a load equal to 70% of the minimum tensile strength is referenced. Slip-critical connections, formerly know as friction-type connections, rely on the friction between the steel plies being clamped together and the high clamp load of the structural bolt/nut to prevent any movement (or slip) of the joint. To accomplish this high level of friction, the structural bots must be fully tensioned to the following minimum clamp loads;
The AISC gives four appropriate methods to fully tension bolts for slip-critical connections. They include the "turn-of-the-nut" method (where you turn the nut through a certain number of degrees to elongate the bolt). The first edition of the AISC manual (1951) had a torque/tension table; however, the table was withdrawn in 1954 due to recognition of the tremendous variation that was found (+/-40%). "Standard" torque/tension relationships determined from tables or formulas are no longer recognized as appropriate means to control pretension. Calibrated wrench tightening may be used provided that the installation procedures are calibrated daily (for each bolt diameter, length, grade, and surface condition). The torque value is best obtained by using a calibrated torque wrench (or transducer) and a Skidmor-Wilhelm type load indicating device to equate torque to tension. The calibrated torque wrench method should be considered as the least favorable of the four tightening options.
Heavy Hex Structural Nuts are manufactured to ASTM A563, ASTM A563M and ASTM A194 specifications and are designed to be stronger than the bolts with which they are assembled.Therefore, a higher strength nut typically may be substituted in the application and should always possess the same finish as the bolt. Never compromise your assembly with an inferior nut.
Grade C and C3 Nuts
The Grade C Heavy Hex Structural Nut is recommended for plain (non-galvanized) ASTM A325 High Strength Structural Bolts. A Grade C Nut is not sufficient for galvanized A325 Bolts since the overtapping of the nut threads required to accommodate the thickness of the zinc coating also reduces the strength of the nut. Grade C Nuts are made out of carbon steel and generally achieve their mechanical properties without heat treatment. The Grade C3 Nuts are made with weathering steel (alloy steel with additions of copper, nickel and chromium) to match up with ASTM A325 Type 3 Bolts.
Grade DH and DH3 Nuts
The Grade DH Heavy Hex Structural Nut is recommended for ASTM A490 Structural Bolts (150,000 psi minimum tensile strength structural bolts and for galvanized ASTM A325 Bolts). Galvanized DH Nuts are lubricated to minimize galling as a requirement of ASTM/AASHTO specifications. A colored dye is included in the lubricant as a requirement to enable visual confirmation of the presence of a lubricant. The green color of Nucor Fastener’s Hot Dip Galvanized nuts distinguishes them from our blue colored Mechanical Galvanized nuts to help prevent mixing. There shall be no mixed coating types on structural bolt/nut combinations per the specifications. Grade DH Nuts are made from medium carbon steel and must be quenched and temper heat treated. Grade DH3 Nuts are made from weathering steel (alloy steel with additions of copper, nickel and chromium), are also heat treated and are designed for use with ASTM A325 Type 3, F1852 Type 3, A490 Type 3 and F2280 Type 3 products
2H Nuts
The ASTM A194 Grade 2H Heavy Hex Nut is designed to be used with bolts in high-pressure and high-temperature service in a plain finish. The ASTM A194 specification is under the jurisdiction of ASTM Committee A-1 (Subcommittee on Valves, Fittings, Bolting, and Flanges for High and Sub-atmospheric Temperatures), as opposed to ASTM A563, which is under the jurisdiction of the ASTM Committee F-16 (Fasteners). The ASTM A194 specification was not meant for normal structural bolting; however, the 2H Nut Heavy Hex Nut is considered a suitable substitute for a Grade DH Nut. If galvanized, an asterisk is required to be present after the grade symbol to signify that the nut has been tapped oversize, so the nut will not be mistakenly placed in a high-pressure, high-temperature application. Nucor recommends the use of Grade DH Nuts any time a galvanized finish is specified.
Metric Class 10S Nuts
The ASTM A563M Class 10S Heavy Hex Nut is recommended for zinc-coated ASTM A325M high strength structural bolts and ASTM A490M bolts. While the Class 8S Nut is recommended for plain A325M Bolts, the Class 10S Nut can be substituted with the approval of the customer and can also be used with A490M bolts. Class 10S Nut mechanical properties are similar to an ASTM A563 Grade DH Nut, are made from medium carbon steel and are quenched and temper heat treated.
